4 Large Oranges
2 cups sugar
2 cups rum or brandy
Cut oranges in half and squeese all juice from oranges into a bowl. Save peel from 1 orange. Scrape out white membrane from the reserved peel and cut peel into narrow strips. Add enough water to orange juice to make 2 cups
Combine sugar, orange juice, and orange peel in heavy saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and simmer until sugar has completely dissolved, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
Combine orange mixture with rum or brandy in a large jar. Cover tightly and let steep at room temperature for 1 month. Shake jar occasionally.
When steeping period is complete, strain and filter the liquid.
Pour into bottles and cap tightly. Let age at least 1 month.
